The Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, New York, held a special concert in Indian Classical Music as a tribute to Padma Vibhushan Girija Devi. It was also termed the ‘Shradhanjali’ concert. Various artists performed in the event which included vocalist, tabla and dholak specialists, etc.
Sanjukta Sen, a teacher at the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, and also a disciple of Girija Devi Ji, directed and presented the concert in fond memory of Girija Devi. She termed Girija Devi Ji akin to a mother to all the students and not just a Guru and said that the legendary singer and her music are immortal.
Girija Devi was an Indian Classical Singer, from Seniya and Banaras Gharana. She performed classical music in “Khayal” and “Thumri” genres. Prolific performances in the “Thumri’s” helped her and the genre gain immense popularity earning Girija Devi the tag, Queen Of Thumri. She passed away earlier in the year at the age of 88.
