Avra Reddy, a 19-year-old student at the University of Wisconsin, has been elected to the Madison City Council in the April 2 elections in the city.
Reddy would represent District 8 in Madison, which covers most of the University of Wisconsin campus, meaning a majority of the district’s constituents are students.
She’s perhaps the youngest to be elected to the 20-seat Madison City Council in Wisconsin. She is also the district’s first female alder in more than 20 years and the first woman of color to ever represent the district, newsreports said.
She defeated Matthew Mitnick, also a Freshman at UWisc. Both Reddy and Mitnick are described as “Nonpartisan” when they were running. Reddy secured more than 53 percent of the vote to Mitnick’s close to 44 percent, according to Ballotpedia.
Originally from neighboring Illinois, Reddy moved to Madison to work on the 2016 election. At 16 years old, she was living on her own in a new city, a city that she would soon fall in love with. She knew that Madison was the only place she could ever dream of living during her college years. Since coming to Madison, Reddy has been an active member of the community whether she is advocating for a better community to being involved in countless student activities.
“It is really important to get a student into the seat because only a student can know what students want and can feel what students feel,” Reddy said.
Reddy said her campaign was focused on four major points — affordable housing, public safety, sustainability and combating homelessness. She acknowledged that a crucial part of achieving the goals she outlined will involve working with other members of the council, the mayor and community leaders.
Reddy said she is working to bring greater representation on the city level by getting young people, people of color, women, and students involved in the process.
