Daya, a nonprofit in Houston, TX, recently hosted their annual gala, “Shine, Celebrating the Light of Survivors,” at the Marriott Town Center in Sugar Land, TX.
The annual gala was to benefit South Asian survivors of domestic and sexual violence. One of the featured guest at the event was human rights activist and filmmaker, Leslee Udwin, producer and director of the documentary, India's Daughter.
Daya was formed in 1996 by seven Indian women in Houston – all of whom were immigrants to the United States. It started with a volunteer helpline, a number they still have today, and would offer emotional support to survivors of domestic violence. Daya is DOJ accredited to assist survivors in immigration status changes, legal support through a highly competent legal clinic, and housing to survivors through donor funds and Rapid Re-housing.
